Day 14 : INGLETON To KIRKBY LONSDALE : Crunch Time

INGLETON To KIRKBY LONSDALE :  Crunch Time

16 September 2012

Miles: 6

All well as we set off from our "cheerful" B and B ( their words ). Biked about 3 miles when it began to pour with rain. We continued on to the first village on our route, Kirkby Lonsdale , biked in and found a lovely little tearoom to wait it out.

Morning tea at Emily's - note the scones and cream

Trouble was, the rain did not let up at all (and at time of writing, 5 pm , it is still raining ). We watched as several groups of bikers came and went, drenched.

We had always said that we would not bike in weather like this - it is so uncomfortable, miserable really, and on busy roads it is also much less safe for bikes themselves, and especially for bikes sharing the road with cars.

We spent the time discussing options, and checking the weather forecast for the next few days. The latter looks pretty dicey., to say the least. About noon we made our decision. We will stay here the night, and tomorrow morning bike about 14 miles, whatever the weather, to Kendal, from where we will take a direct train to Edinburgh.

This will relieve a lot of the time pressure we have been feeling, and we will hope for better weather to complete our ride through Scotland, although of course we have no guarantee on that score.

We are installed at the Royal Hotel in Kirkby Lonsdale , perched on a window seat overlooking the square, skyping Sarah, and catching up on all sorts of things, not the least of which is just letting go and relaxing,,,,

The square from our room

Emily's tea rooms - the pink place with the big teapot sign

John perched in the window seat - wouldn't you rather be here?

And to top it off, dinner was great - grilled sardines to start, then oven baked lemon sole with curly kale....

  1. Hi Lynley

Still following your delightful blogg. Your route is very similar to ours so I recognise alot of the place names. The pic of you sheltering in a bus stop for morning smoko is exactly as we did, several times, I remember how cold and bleak it was, no real shelter from the wind.

Great to see you are in Kirkby Lonsdale, from your picture looking down upon the square I can see up the street to where we stayed not far from the square, a homeless guy hangs out in the octagon shaped shelter/memorial in the square. Ihope the weather pics up as there is quite a lot to see on an easy walk around Kirby Lonsdale.

We only made it one more days riding from Kirkby Lonsdale to Kirby Stephens before we legged it on the train across England to seek the sun in Holland. Looking forward to your next update
