As we went to bed last night, we really thought we might wake to rain, so it was a delight to see the sun and very few clouds. Pretty brisk though, although I am not sure of the exact temperature

Lovely brekky at this really nice hotel. Mike and Lesley have owned and run it for 2o years, having bought it when it was in ramshackle shape, and gradually improved it. They had careers in air traffic control in the Middle East (Mike) and nursing, also in the Middle East (Lesley ). She also spent a year nursing in Auckland , which is where they got engaged to be married, so they loved chatting about NZ.

Set out at 7.50 am, our earliest start so far, and it was decidedly nippy. Colefordd is on the.edge of the Royal Forest of Dean, which is at quite high elevation, so we had some delicious downhill runs to the edge of the River Wye. Went through a couple of rather grim, shady and cold valley villages, which we think were probably mill towns, before enjoying a beautiful ride on very narrow lanes along the bank of the river Wye  At one point it was a public road through a private estate, and was just gorgeous.

Market square in Ross on Wye

Our ride today was through beautiful, rolling, mostly bikable country, with only a couple of short sharp nasty hills, which messed up our mph of course.

The biggest problem by far was the vicious head wind. No matter which way we were biking it was in our face, and it was so enervating

Below is a giant harvester we saw operating today in a wheat field

                                                      THANK YOU, Anne and Alain!!!!!!!!!!

However, a treat was in store for us at the end. During the day we were in touch with our friend and hostess Gerry from London, who drove all the way over here to spend the evening with us, and so shortly after we had booked in to the Talbot Hotel in Leominster, Gerry arrived. What a great friend.

Linley, Gerry and John - what a terrible picture - the fellow guest who took this must have had the shakes,
